Virender Sehwag: Age, Net Worth in Rupees, Height, Stats, DC, IPL

When somebody is talking about aggressive batting, different people imagine diverse heroes. And while the appearance of more and more aggressive batsmen can be linked to the adoption of the T20 format, real offensive beauty was already destroyed in ODIs and Tests. Yes, the talk is about Virender Sehwag, the hurricane with a bat, and an optional bowler to be appreciated by the whole of India even after his career’s end.

General info: age, height, stats, and records

The recent age of Viru is 43, and he has not played cricket for 7 years. With a height of 1.7 metres, it was quite problematic to become a pacer. However, being quite quick with an immediate situation assessment, he wasn’t running a lot and relied mostly on hand power. And it was superb, especially against spin balls, which were often sent to or above boundaries.

Like all the cricketers, Virender Sehwag has two roles on the pitch. Except for the batting, he was actually a successful bowler on some occasions. Thus, with 3731 balls as a bowler in Tests only, he achieved a great economy of 3.04 and took 40 wickets. In the ODIs, the situation was even better. With 600 more balls, his economy was 5.26, accelerated by crucial 96 wickets. However, Indian cricket lovers know that the main weapon of Nawab of Najafgarh was a bat, and it’s time to look at the responsive stats:

Bat stats
Format Test ODI FC T20s
Matches 104 251 90 140
Innings 180 245 141 139
Runs 8586 8273 6097 3667
SR 82.23 104.33 80.79 148.10
Average 49.34 35.05 44.83 27.57
50s 32 38 23 22
100s 23 15 19 2

The stats table is always interesting but needs some explanations. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to list the records of Virender Sehwag. It’s impossible to make it with all his achievements, so we’ll count only the most notable one for the international cricket scene:

  • One of only four in the world with two 300+ runs in Tests
  • ODI most scoring captain (219 runs against West Indies, in 2011)
  • Best bowling strike rate in the ODI game (4.2 against Bangladesh, in 2010)
  • One of only seven in the world with 200+ runs while carrying a bat in a Test (201 not out against Sri Lanka, in 2008)
  • Second-global in number of 4s in a Test inning (47 against Pakistan, in 2006)
  • Second-global in number of 4s in an ODI game (25 against West Indies, in 2011)
  • Third-global in consecutive half-centuries in Tests (11 fifties during 2009-2010)
  • Third-global in the number of runs during a single Test day (284 runs against Sri Lanka in 2009)
  • Crucial 5000+ runs and 50+ fielding dismissals in both Test and ODI games
  • Triple appearance in ICC’s ODI Team of Year (in 2004, 2009, 2011)
  • Test cricketer of the Year by ICC (in 2010 and nominated in 2004)

A quite unique ability to combine aggressive playstyle with endurance allowed Sehwag to deliver two and even three hundred in Tests with a strike rate above 100. He could play safely but usually tried to please the audience with a flying ball rather than a safe touch. Such an approach allowed him to reach all these records and be at the top of Indian cricketers throughout the game’s history.

Virender Sehwag cricket

Birthday and early career years

The middle of autumn, October 20 in 1978, became the birthday of Virender. He was born in Delhi in the family of Krishan and Krishna Sehwag, who relocated to the capital from Haryana. Although Virender was the third child in the family with an even younger brother born soon, they have even a bigger joint family. Quite rarely for the Indians, his father wasn’t actively supporting Virender in cricket, while his mother did and was absolutely right.

He started in the local Delhi team and joined the main squad when he was 19. In just a year, Virender was part of the North Zone and entered the top-5 run-scorers in the Duleep Trophy. Moreover, Sehwag improved this result in the following season of 1999-2000 and a tournament’s record with 274 runs in a matchup. Such crucial achievements at a distance forced the scouts of national youth teams and the main one to pay attention to the talent of Virender and try him on the international level. Tests and ODIs for India, IPL performance

The international debut game for Sehwag was in early 1999 against archrivals from Pakistan. An unfortunate one run became the reason to wait until the youngster would be more consistent, and the real joining of the national ODI squad came only in 2001. However, the overall success of Virender in One Day format was similar to a roller coaster – he could fail the whole season (like 2003 or 2007) but dominate in another (like 2004 or 2009).

Interestingly, the aggressive style made him more consistent in Test performances, where the ability to risk goes to the background. The debut Test happened at the end of 2001 against South Africa, and the maiden century came just from the very first game. Sehwag’s two triple-tons in Tests show his abilities to deliver quality at a distance. Moreover, Virender usually made his over-century scores with a strike rate higher than 100.

However, the end of Sehwag’s career wasn’t a fairytale. Virender lost concentration and ability to deliver triple-digit scores at the beginning of 2010th and lost a battle against growing and promising batters like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. His last games on the international scene were played in 2013, while his career in the T20I finished even a year before.

Nonetheless, his name was still a magnet for attention, and Sehwag was part of the IPL from 2008 to 2015. His first team was Delhi Capitals, which he joined at his career peak and was a pretty important chain in the team’s success. But the poor form in 2013 forced DC not to renew the contract, and he joined Kings XI Punjab for two seasons without notable achievements. Although Virender’s contribution in T20s isn’t huge, he finished the career with a great strike rate of almost 150 due to his aggressiveness, with a quite good average of 27.57. In 2015, he announced his retirement from all forms of competitions. The only performances with a bat were show matches, where Sehwag looked quite great.

Personal life: family, wife, and recent activity

Virender joined the list of family people in 2004 when he married Aarti Ahlawat. Being at the peak of popularity, Viru’s wedding took a lot of attention, so it was additionally secured and held in the residence of the Minister of Unity Law. The couple knew each other since early childhood and transformed their love into the birth of two sons: Aryavir (2007) and Vedant (2010).

Sehwag now takes the position in the Anti Doping board. Being a player in 2011, Virender opened an international school in Haryana, which was the dream of his father. His impact in cricket was recognized with multiple civil awards. Moreover, Delhi’s cricket association renamed one of the gates at the local Arun Jaitley Stadium in honour of Sehwag as a local cricket star.

Additional playing aspects: net worth in rupees, jersey number, batting playstyle

Although the Nawab of Najafgarh finished his career seven years ago, his net worth is still great. Moreover, it is still fulfilling due to his Twitter activity, which can bring about 20 crore rupees per year. So, an estimated net worth in 2022 for Sehwag is close to 290 crore rupees or $40 million. Interestingly, Virender also had a numerologist who helped him to choose a jersey number. At some point, he was changing numbers on the jersey just before every game, so now many know that a blank t-shirt is a norm for Viru. Want more interesting posts about cricket and cricketers? Sehwag was an optional middle-order bowler in his team and wasn’t stable with deliveries. Although his favourite throw was off-spin, Virender perceived spinners as easy targets for his bat. With a specific manner of stepping back before the hit, which is recognized as the wrong approach, his muscle power allowed him to hit heavily. An eagle-eye sent signals to his powerful shoulders and hands, and regular 4s and 6s were a typical outcome in an over. A lot of experts still perceive Sehwag as one of the most aggressive batters in the history of cricket, while top bowlers remember him as the opponent they didn’t want to face on the pitch.
