India has three variants how to cope with South Africa’s tour

The growing danger from the new Covid variant, Omicron, forced the BCCI to rethink their tour to South Africa. As the hosting country awaits the fourth pandemic wave with registered Omicron variants, the trip to South Africa is now on pause.

Before the recent concern, the sides have had to play ten games in three formats. The start is planned with three Test clashes, starting on December 17. The next should be another three ODIs with a planned beginning on January 11. And the last stage of the great tour was left to four T20 battles, from January 19 to 26, with one-day pauses between the games.

As the opening matches should be played in Test format, they became the target for discussions. Thus, the BCCI thinks about reducing the number of Tests at least. The second variant is postponing the tour until the situation stabilises. The third and most unfortunate option – refuse to visit the country to eliminate health risks for players and staff.

The first seed of potential problems with a tour has already happened. The squad-choosing procedure is delayed, and that can be only a beginning. The next will be tightening the visiting conditions between the countries, which already require regular tests and seven-day quarantine after arrival.

Everyone in South Africa who loves cricket prays the higher forces the tour to happen. It will have not only a sporting interest but economic as well.
