Sri Lanka stole West Indies’ dreams for playoff

West Indies 169/8 (20) – Sri Lanka 189/2 (20). The defeat in this game led to the confirmed quitting of the T20 World Cup for the West Indies, while Sri Lanka lost their playoff chances even earlier. Having two games to play, the Men in Maroon could grab six points in total and hope for the tie with South Africa and Australia. However, Sri Lanka showed that they also had enough motivation to battle for prestige.

The prematch situation seemed to be in favour of the Windies, who even won the toss. However, they decided to bowl first, which was a mistake. Talented Sri Lanka dive into batting with great passion. Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka scored half-centuries each, while other batters also converted the number of balls into more runs. 189 runs in total and only three wickets gave a huge advantage for the Lions.

The comeback had never begun for West Indies since their opening batters scored only nine runs in 11 balls and were eliminated. The hopes came alive when Nicholas Pooran was almost able to reach a half-century in 34 balls but was also eliminated. The forces of Shimron Hetmyer weren’t enough (81 runs in 54 balls) since none of the other batters wasn’t able to score even ten runs. Still, a pretty nice result of 169 runs in total, but not enough to overcome Sri Lanka.

Both teams are now officially eliminated from the tournament, although the Men in Maroon have one more game with Australia. Will they be able to surprise a favourite and poison its chances of going to the playoffs, just like Sri Lanka did with them? Want to know more about cricket and don’t miss the important news?
