Adding two new franchises to the IPL brought plenty of rumours about potential transfers. The appearance of Lucknow and Ahmedabad in the tournament increased interest in strong players, although retention costs some extra money for the teams.

The league announced salary rules, so now the team cannot pay more than Rs 90 crore per team. The more players retained, the more a franchise has to pay for them. At the same time, no more than four players can be saved, which will cost 42 crore rupees for the teams – almost half of the budget.

Nonetheless, teams are ready to pay a lot for the major stars and build the game plan around them. Logically, the champions Chennai Super Kings saved Ravindra Jadeja (₹16 cr) and MS Dhoni (₹12 cr), Delhi Capitals retained Rishabh Pant (₹16 cr) and Axar Patel (₹9 cr), while Mumbai Indians are ready to continue paying high for Rohit Sharma (₹16 cr), Jasprit Bumrahdia (₹12 cr), and Suryakumar Yadav (₹8 cr). While Virat Kohli doesn’t want to lead the team as captain, Royal Challengers Bangalore decided to save him too, paying ₹15 crores.

Among the most interesting transfers are KL Rahul’s joining to Lucknow, while Shreyas Iyer is aiming for Ahmedabad. Traditionally, no more than eight overseas cricketers will be available for every team. The auction will take place at the end of December or early January 2022.
